Aetna: Aetna is a national insurance company and provides coverage in all 50 states. Aetna provides coverage to either small or large employers depending on the number of employees. Narrow, medium and full networks are available for both PPO and HMO type plans.
Anthem Blue Cross of California: Anthem offers PPO, EPO and HMO coverage for small and large employers with an extensive network which can be narrowed to reduce pricing.
Blue Shield of California: Blue Shield operates as a not-for-profit corporation exclusively in California. Blue Shield offers plans in the small and large employer markets with both narrow or full networks.
California Choice: California Choice is a privately owned "exchange" that combines several different companies into one offering for your employees.
Cigna + Oscar: Oscar known for its high-touch concierge customer service combined with CIGNA who provides size and network access. They write small group coverage with a full (open access) network and a narrower (local plus) network.
Covered California for Small Business: Covered California for Small Business is a government run "exchange" with the ability to provide several companies into one offering for your employees. Small employers can also apply for the Small Business Medical Tax Credit with coverage provided through the Covered California Small Business program.
Health Net: Health Net offers small and large employers coverage under their PPO and HMO plans. They were purchased by Centene in 2015. Centene is a Medicare focused company and fits well with Health Net's Medicare business.
Kaiser Permanente: The largest health plan in California as measured by membership. It is also a not-for-profit corporation. Kaiser offers coverage in small and large group markets using the "staff-model" approach. The staff-model is where the doctors, hospital and insurance company are all one entity.
United Healthcare: United Healthcare (UHC) is the biggest insurance company providing insurance. They offer small and large group plans and provide both PPO and HMO type plans with a range of Networks from narrow to full. Coverage is provided nationwide for employers with employees in different states.
